Columbia, S.C. — July 21, 2025 — Sam Johnson, a lifelong Columbian, public servant, and community leader, has officially announced his candidacy for an at-large seat on Columbia City Council. With a career defined by service, results, and a deep love for his hometown, Johnson is stepping forward to help shape Columbia’s future.

“Columbia is my home. It’s where I was born, raised, educated, and where I’m raising my own family,” said Johnson. “I’m running for City Council because I believe in the power of public service to make a real difference—and I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work for the people of this city.”

Born and raised in Columbia, Sam is the son of a truck driver and an Alzheimer’s nurse. His parents worked long hours and night shifts to provide opportunities they never had, instilling in him a strong work ethic and an unshakable belief in what’s possible. His grandmother, Mary Starks, was one of the first professional Black women golfers in South Carolina, blazing a trail that continues to inspire Sam’s commitment to breaking barriers and building opportunity.

After graduating from Spring Valley High School, Sam attended the University of South Carolina and began his career in public service working for SC Representative Anton Gunn. He later joined Steve Benjamin’s historic 2009 mayoral campaign and, following Benjamin’s victory, served in the Mayor’s Office. There, Sam helped secure over $1 billion in economic investment for Columbia and led key initiatives including My Brother’s Keeper Columbia, the Mayor’s Fellows Program, the Famously Hot New Year Celebration, the Regional Mayors Collaboration, and the Bull Street redevelopment project.

Sam went on to earn his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law and joined Nexsen Pruet (now Maynard Nexsen), where he worked alongside former Mayor Bob Coble on public policy and job creation. In 2023, he became CEO of Civint, a municipal government advisory firm founded by former Mayor Steve Benjamin, helping organizations across the country navigate local government.

Sam is also a dedicated community leader, serving on the boards of numerous organizations including the South Carolina Afterschool Alliance (Chair), The Nickelodeon Theatre, Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, Trustus Theatre, SC PASOs, and many more.

He lives in Columbia with his wife, local attorney Ashley Johnson, and their two daughters, Kennedy and Olivia.

Key Highlights of Sam Johnson’s Leadership:

  • Hands-On Leadership Experience: From City Hall to the boardroom, Sam has led with integrity and delivered real results for Columbia.
  • Deep Community Roots: A lifelong Columbian with a legacy of service and a vision for a stronger, more inclusive city.
  • Results-Driven Leadership: Proven ability to turn ideas into action and deliver measurable progress for residents.

“I believe in a Columbia where every neighborhood thrives, every voice is heard, and every family has a chance to succeed,” Johnson said. “Together, we can build a city that works for all of us.”
